Car Insurance in the UK

Car Insurance is compulsary in the UK for all motorised vehicles that use the public road. 'Third Party Only' is the cheapest form of car insurance available in the UK and covers the driver for damage to other vehicles, people and property.

'Third Part Fire and Theft' car insurance will also cover if the driver's vehicle is stolen or set on fire. 'Comprehensive insurance' also covers the driver's vehicle and will pay out if the car is damaged or written off.

The Road Traffic Act requires all motorists to be insured against their liability for injuries to others (including passengers) and for damage to other people's property resulting from use of a vehicle on a road or any public place. It is an offence, i.e. illegal to drive your car or allow others to drive it without insurance.

Most private motorists have comprehensive insurance. Around a third choose third party fire and theft, with a small proportion taking out more limited forms of cover.
